Short answer: if 5 rules, or 5 automatic groups, cover the sites you use, the free plan is enough.
- Free: 5 rules, 5 Category/AI groups, 5 hibernated tabs, duplicate prevention, auto-suspend, quick actions.
- Premium: no caps, advanced rule patterns, Quick Switch, sessions, profiles, Resource Dashboard, backup and sync.
- Both plans: no account, no analytics, the same 6 languages.

Two notes on the free caps. The 5-rule limit includes the 2 starter rules Takt adds on install; delete them if you don't use them. The 5-group limit in Category and AI modes counts every tab group open in Chrome, including ones you made by hand.
How much does Takt Premium cost?
$3 per month or $30 per year. The yearly plan saves about 17%. Upgrade from the options page, on the Upgrade tab. Payment and the plan check run through ExtensionPay. To use Premium on another computer, click Already paid? Log in to restore your subscription on that tab.
Do I need Premium?
Many people don't. Stay on Free if:
- You live in a handful of sites. Five domain rules cover a lot: code, docs, mail, local dev, video.
- You'd rather not write rules. Category mode groups by site type, and 5 groups is often enough.
- Your problem is duplicates or memory. Duplicate prevention and auto-suspend are free.
Premium is worth it if:
- You need more than 5 groups, or patterns such as "every pull request" (glob or regex).
- You search tabs from the keyboard all day. That's Quick Switch.
- You switch between projects and want to save a workspace and bring it back. That's sessions.
- You keep work and home rules apart, or use more than one computer. That's profiles and sync.
What happens when a Premium subscription ends?
Takt checks your plan at startup and every 15 minutes. Once the subscription has ended, the free limits apply again. Takt deletes nothing:
- Rules all stay, but only the first 5 in your list stay active. Of those, single-condition rules with contains, exact or domain keep grouping; rules with several conditions, a title condition, or a glob or regex pattern stop matching. Rules after the fifth pause. You can't add a new rule while you have 5 or more.
- Hibernated tabs stay, and you can wake them. You can hibernate new ones once you're under 5.
- Sessions stay stored, but saving and restoring need Premium again.
- Profiles stop applying. All your rules work together, as if no profile were active.
- Category and AI modes go back to 5 groups.
Subscribe again and everything works as before.
What Premium doesn't change
- Privacy is the same on both plans. No account, no analytics. The plan check goes to ExtensionPay; see what Takt does with your data.
- Sync works on both plans. Your rules and settings sync between computers through Chrome Sync on both plans; on Free that covers your 5 rules.
- Chrome's own tools are still there. Memory Saver and tab group sync are free and built in. If they cover you, you may not need Takt at all.
Start free. Upgrade only if you hit a limit.
